Phase 1 – Mapping and Alignment

The GOAL of phase 1 is to establish a shared conceptual framework and map existing knowledge and tools. It Identifies opportunities for linking performance-driven computational design with human-centered approaches and maps AI techniques to support it. It also defines a shared vocabulary around soft and hard values and responsible AI in design.

The ACTIVITIES include joint workshops at TU Delft and EUR to map AI and computational design methods in relation to soft values. It surveys professional practice on current way of working about soft and hard values, on current AI and computational design methods and on own views for AI regarding soft values.

It delivers a PLAIA Framework Document – an interdisciplinary foundation outlining existing definitions, methods, tools, gaps, and research directions.

Phase 2 – Co-creation and Exploration

The GOAL of phase 2 is to engage across architectural and engineering professionals, academics, computer scientists and cognitive scientists on preliminary joint experiments with AI-assisted and parametric workflows that integrate qualitative and quantitative values.

The ACTIVITIES include design-research sprints and dedicated workshop sessions on case-based explorations discussing and/or applying AI and optimization tools to real design challenges. AI techniques may relate to sentiment analysis and affective computing. Case studies are chosen together with architectural offices.

It delivers a PLAIA Exploration Portfolio – a collection of small case studies with professional practice and insights demonstrating synergies between AI-driven and human-centered design approaches.

Phase 3 – Synthesis and Future Vision

The GOAL of phase 3 is to consolidate insights and formulate a shared long-term research agenda. This includes for example professional education needs, joint proposals practice-academia, vision on future directions.

The ACTIVITIES include a synthesis workshop to define research priorities and collaboration models for future PhD and master-level programs; the development of the PLAIA Vision and Roadmap outlining key themes, data needs, ethical frameworks and potential business models for architectural firms; a public symposium.

It delivers a PLAIA Manifesto with vision and roadmap. It also delivers means to disseminate outcomes to a wider network of designers, academics, and policymakers.
